Portugal > Lisboa > Santos Lima
The Lisboa wine district stretches north from the capital Lisbon along the atlantic coast for some dozen miles. Formerly known as the Estremadura region (because it was at the extreme edge of Christendom during a portion of the Reconquista), its name was changed to avoid confusion with the Spanish Extremadura district. There is a great variety of wines produced in the Lisboa VR, including this gem from Casa Santos Lima, their Bons Ventos wines.
Casa Santos Lima was founded by Joachim Santos Lima c.1800, and today is run by Joachim's granddaughter Maria Joao Santos Lima and his great-grandson Jose Luis Santos Lima Oliveira da Silva. Together, they have completely relaunched the company, replanting many of the vineyards, and bringing in modern winemaking techniques and technology. Today the estate is a major producer of superb-value wines from a variety of locations throughout Portugal.
Bons Ventos, their flagship wine from the Lisboa region, is a bright, fresh and fruit-driven wine with balance and succulence. Easy drinking and designed for immediate consumption, the tannins are low, and the acids moderate.
