Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch is a Local Municipality within the Cape Winelands District Municipality of South Africa’s Western Cape Province. The village of Stellenbosch was founded in 1679 and within several decades became the center of the South African wine industry.

The climate is Mediterranean with long, dry summers and cool, damp winters. Soils are sandy and largely composed of decomposed granites from the surrounding mountain ranges.

Use the best grapes from the best vineyards with minimal interference during the winemaking process. That will give you wines that are distinctive and expressive of place and vintage
— Louis Roos, Winemaker

The collection Wines

The Mooiplaas Collection: a range of varietals designed to be easy, refreshing and food-friendly, each named for its primary aromatic note

The Lemongrass Sauvignon Blanc: Crisp and bright with high-tone lemon notes, great acidity and a nice dollop of minerality.

The Peach Chenin/Viognier: Crafted with about 25% Semillon, this wine shows a lovely blend of peach and honey notes and a mid-bodied refreshing style

The Strawberry Pinotage Rose: Delicate and a pure pink color with an intense nose of fresh strawberry. Seasonal availability.

The Bean Pinotage: aged on well roasted French oak staves to enhance the mocha notes in this deep plummy wine.

The Coco Merlot: also oak-aged, fine-grained tannins and deep chocolate/plum notes

The Mulberry Syrah: Deep purple red and incredibly juicy with ripe cherry and cassis fruit and very gentle tannins.

mooiplaas

Mooiplaas is a historic and traditional working wine estate as well as a private nature reserve with an incredible wealth of pristine natural beauty. The history of the farm dates back to 1806, when Petrus (Pieter) Bosman purchased the property and built its iconic manor house, now a national monument and a superb example of Cape Dutch architecture.

Situated in the Bottelary Hills of Stellenbosch, there is a difference of approximately 775 ft between the highest and the lowest areas on the estate. The highest point of the estate (1225 ft above sea level) provides a panoramic view over the Cape Peninsula, with False Bay to the left and Table Bay to the right.

The historic property was purchased by Nicolaas Roos in 1963. He was joined in the 1980’s by his two sons Tielman, viticulturist, and Louis, winemaker, who today produce a range of environmentally friendly wines rooted in tradition, respect for the land and artisanal winemaking techniques to best express the unique terroir of the Stellenbosch Valley.

The Estate Wines

Mooiplaas Estate Sauvignon Blanc: From a vineyard high up on the Hills at about 1,000ft on a southeast-facing slope that receives cool breezes off the Atlantic Ocean. Ripe and lush with vivid mouthfeel and a long silky finish. Fermented with extended lees contact including 3 months of regular remontage (pump-over of the casks to integrate the autolyzing lees) then natural settling to clarify before bottling without fining or filtration. Superb.

Mooiplaas Estate Cabernet Sauvignon: From a vineyard located 475ft above sea level on a north-west facing slope. Gravel soil offers less vigorous growth which, together with sufficient heat due to the slope and altitude, leads to ideal ripening conditions for fully ripened grapes. The Roos Family Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine for the long run. Made in a classical style, this Cabernet Sauvignon has the potential for decades of aging. Dark color, cloves and lead pencil nose, tannin still tight as a young wine, but start to open a year or so after bottling. A great companion for lamb shank or oxtail.
