The fortress city of Palmanova, built by the Venetians in 1593 to protect against Turkish invasion
I trevenezie
The Trevenezie, The Three Venices, is a historical name for the regions of Venezia Tridentina (today’s Trentino - Alto Adige), Venezia Euganea (modern Veneto, and Venezia Giulia (currently Friuli-Venezia Giulia- Friuli was historically part of Venezia Eugania, but is now conjoined to Venezia Giulia). This border zone is a fairyland of Medieval cities, ancient castles and the trade routes connecting the rich lands of the Po River Valley to the lands of the Austro-Hungarian Empire to the north and east.
della venezie
Until recently wines from the broad Trevenezie area were classed as Della Venezie IGT. In 2017, Della Venezie was upgraded to a DOC with stricter regulation, and a new Trevenezie IGT was created, in keeping with the convention of IGT wines carrying the name of the region(s) of origin.
Maturo
The Castellani family has been growing grapes in Tuscany for centuries. In the late 1800’s Alfredo took control of the family business and founded Famiglia Castellani in 1903 to bottle and distribute its own wines. That winery is today run by Sergio Castellani and his 3 children. In 1945 a branch of the family under Michele Castellani formed his eponymous winery in the Veneto, and today the family businesses produce wine from The Austrian border down to Sicily. Maturo (Ripe) is a label of the Tuscan branch of the family, made with fruit sourced in the Trevenezie. Classically crisp and dry, with notes of melon, golden apple and peach. Great value!
