Rioja Alta

The Rioja Alta, the section of Rioja along the southwest bank of the upper Ebro and its tributaries, is one of the world’s great wine destinations, with the planet’s largest concentration of century-plus old wineries. A sublime conjunction of terroir, wine, art and architecture make this a bucket-list district.

Wines of the Rioja Alta’s poor, stony soils are elegant and delicate much like their cousins from the Rioja Alavesa across the river.

leza garcia

Bodegas y Viñedos Leza García is a family-run winery that produces, ages, and markets wines from its own vineyards. It is located in in the Najerilla valley, in the heart of La Rioja Alta, a region with a winemaking tradition renowned for its quality.

Since Juan Leza Arenzana founded the winery in the early 20th century, the Leza García family has been dedicated to the art of winemaking for three generations, with the aim of producing quality wines and satisfying wine lovers.

All wines are produced from the family’s own vineyards, which are worked organically. Cellar work is minimalist, designed to allow the fruit and terroir to speak for themselves.

the wine

We carry just one wine from this estate, their unique and fascinating Leza Garcia Orange. 90% Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Viura, it’s the only wine in all of Rioja allowed to claim Rioja DOCa on an orange wine!

Gaining its apricot hue from enhanced skin contact, this blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Viura has aromas of apple peel, dried thyme and lemon. Dried herb flavors open on the palate alongside flavors of peach, dried apricot, lemon thyme, oregano and smoke. It has the mouthfeel of a red wine combined with the freshness of a young white.
